During the year 2008, the Eastern Shores white delivery truck was a familiar sight on the highways and byways of Ozaukee and Sheboygan counties.  The van delivered 850,052 items among sixteen area libraries five days each week.

The truck is loaded each morning at the Eastern Shores office on the south side of the city of Sheboygan and then sets out on its route, stopping at the public libraries in the communities of Sheboygan, Oostburg, Cedar Grove, Port Washington, Mequon, Cedarburg, Grafton, Saukville, Random Lake, Plymouth, Elkhart Lake, Sheboygan Falls, and Kohler.  Additional stops include the libraries at Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution, and Lakeland College.  The end of the route brings the truck back to the Eastern Shores office where the items picked up during the day are sorted and the truck is loaded for the next day’s deliveries.

The Eastern Shores Library System receives a daily delivery from a statewide courier service operated by the South Central Library System in Madison.  Last year the vans owned and operated by this service delivered close to 1.6 million items among public library systems, the University of Wisconsin system libraries, private college libraries, and state government libraries.  About 36,700 of these items were delivered to Eastern Shores.

Items delivered among the libraries include letters and memos, items being borrowed on interlibrary loan, items that were borrowed from one library but returned to another library, kits of materials for use in programming, promotional materials, summer library program materials, and library equipment.  Many of items were requested through EasiCat, the Eastern Shores online catalog, that customers use to request items from another library in Sheboygan or Ozaukee counties.

David Weinhold, Eastern Shores director, reports that the cost per item (box, book, DVD, envelope) for all items delivered is 1/3rd the cost of a postage stamp.
