Eastern Shores Library System operates a delivery van that delivers items among libraries in Sheboygan and Ozaukee Counties.  Larry Baldock, the van driver, logged more than 43,000 miles during 2002, delivering nearly 412,000 items among area libraries each week.

The van is loaded each morning at the Eastern Shores office on the south side of the city of Sheboygan and then sets out on its route, stopping at the public libraries in the communities of Sheboygan, Oostburg, Cedar Grove, Port Washington, Mequon, Cedarburg, Grafton, Saukville, Random Lake, Plymouth, Elkhart Lake, Sheboygan Falls, and Kohler.  Additional stops include the libraries at St. Nicholas Hospital, Northern Ozaukee High School, Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution, and Lakeland College.  The end of the route brings the van back to the Eastern Shores office where the items picked up during the day are sorted and the van is loaded for the next day’s deliveries.

The Eastern Shores Library System receives a daily delivery from a statewide courier service operated by the South Central Library System in Madison.  Last year the sixteen vans owned and operated by this service delivered over 10,000,000 items among public library systems, the University of Wisconsin system libraries, private college libraries, and state government libraries.  About 38,000 of these items were delivered to Eastern Shores.

Items delivered among the libraries include letters and memos, items being borrowed on interlibrary loan, items that were borrowed from one library but returned to another library, kits of materials for use in programming, promotional materials, summer library program materials, and library equipment.

David Weinhold, Eastern Shores director, reports that the cost per item (box, book videocassette, envelope) for all items delivered is approximately $0.21, less than the cost of a postage stamp.

Since the beginning of 2001, the van delivery service was expanded to five days a week to the public libraries.  Mead Public Library in Sheboygan receives twice-daily delivery.  The extra days were added to the van schedule in anticipation of the increased usage that the libraries would see once then implemented EasiCat, the shared automated network.

EasiCat permits customers in Ozaukee and Sheboygan counties to view the items owned by all of the public libraries, determine what is available, and then place a hold on the item and have it delivered to the most convenient public library.  Customers are able to view the shared catalog at any public library or at home, school, or place of business via the Internet.
